“Book Lovers” by Emily Henry was a fun, campy romcom and one that was hard NOT to enjoy. Especially as a “book lover” myself.
The book took the typical trope of “uptight city gal” going to a small town to “find love” and dumped it on its head.
Emily certainly understands her genre and as my design teacher would often tell us, “Learn the rules so you can effectively break them.”
Emily certainly does that well with this book.
Not only does she make fun of the trope – she calls it out specifically and makes fun of it. (Which I have to admit, was hilarious!)
Speaking of hilarity, the banter in this book is spot on.
There were so many times when I was laughing out loud with the absurd things the two main characters were saying to each other.
While Nora was the uptight city gal, through and through… Charlie was the uptight city guy/asshole everyone loves to hate. At least… at first.
The more the two of them interacted, the more you got to know the “real them” and the people they were hiding underneath were… in a word… perfect. At least for each other.
I often saw a lot of myself and my husband in this book. We both met on Twitter (of all places), talking about the first books we were writing. While we weren’t rivals, by any stretch of the imagination, our banter back and forth was pretty dang funny. Even if I do say so myself. LOL!
In conclusion, “Book Lovers” was a fun, and often silly read. There wasn’t much in the way of heat, but there were definitely sparks. Overall, if you’re looking for a book that will make you laugh, take you out of your head, and onto the page, this is a fantastic read. I applauded Emily for the book and I can’t wait to read “Beach Reads” next.
